Hello everyone, my name is Bill Johnson. I'll
soon be 36, at the end of the month. I'm a C 5/6
complete from an auto accident and it will be 4 years Feb
18th. I live in West Central Illinois with my parents.
I am currently going to school part time and will
get a certificate in Accounting at the end of this
semester. I am getting interested in Desktop Publishing.
I'm taking PageMaker this semester also.<br
how Randy feels about having a bowel accident away
from home. I had my first public one just last
semester in school just before class started, luckly, and
was able to get out before it got messy. I have other
bowel accidents but not in the publics eye. I often
wonder how I would cope with that at a full time job. I
also am not able to cath myself which hinders my
freedom. <br
lately either. I don't know if I had a little flu or if
its my intake. I take stool softners and drink prune
juice to help things along. I use the magic bullet for
a every other night bp. Sometimes it works and
sometimes it don't. I believe that you have to finds what
works for you and do it, everybodys different. But
different ideas might help someone elses
program.<br
here. Had maybe 3 inches of snow but it was wet and
never blowed any, thankfully! Monday we had some
freezing rain and Tuesday when I went to class I had to
have dad help me to my van cause my powerchair would
just spin out on our sidewalk. Warm tires and ice
don't work!<br

During World War Two a highly accredited British fighter pilot is shot
down while on a mission over Germany and taken prisoner. However while
doing so he suffers a injury to his leg that becomes infected. And the leg
is amputated the German doctor at the prison camp in which he is held.
As a professional curiosity the amputated leg is packaged up and shipped
back to England for burial. Afterwards however the infection spreads to
his other leg. Making it necessary for the German doctor to amputate the
English pilot's other leg. And like before it is packaged up and also sent
to England for burial. Not very long afterwards the infection again
spreads, this time to the English fighter pilot's arm. And the Doctor is
forced to amputate the pilot's arm. As the English fighter pilot lays in
recovery afterwards, he asks the German doctor if his arm has been shipped
back to England like his two legs had been. "Nein..." the German doctor
replies... "...after having shipped your legs, mein Superiors suspect you
are using the infection as a attempt to escape back to England"

Thought that question would come up...She is a
SCI 5/6..Her hands are in a cupped position. She can
place a pencil through her fingers and writes and her
van controls are pegs she can hold on to. She can do
a lot of things but that is one thing she can't do.
She can dress herself but it takes such a long time.
I think there are lots of things people can do but
the energy and time that it consumes doesn't make it
real practical. It's the same with using a manual
chair..It's possible but so much more efficient and less time
and wear and tear on the body and energy. Maybe it's
how you place your priorities. These are just my
thoughts and only gained from the people I have been

Well, the invitation goes for everyone. I am
always so proud that our house if fully accesible. I can
ask anyone to my home and know that they can come
right up the ramp and come in. It is somewhat of a
pigpen anymore but we're happy ..so I guess that is all
that counts. I have been playing around in my mind
about the meeting in Ohio. My daughter will have her
baby the last of May or first of June and I've been
promised I get to come and stay a while when she goes back
to work to baby sit. Forgot when the meeting

My daughter is strongly against the foley too.
She only uses it when she can't use the intermitt
method. After she uses it sometimes she is incontient for
a time or two. The Drs. has told her due to her own
body The foley will cause stones. After rehab when she
was on the foley within less than two months we took
out 28 stones. So she has a fear of using it for any
length of time. That was early on for her and then
everyone is different. It doesn't give her much freedom to
be intermitt. Seems like it would make life a little
more simple but maybe to many negative side effects
for her. Since she can't cath herself it really ties
her down. Dorla

I have used Viagra since it has been availble
(and also like it as ablec has described ) . If you
have a partner get some and try it !!! The person
using it can't have any heart trouble, or high blood
pressure thats the only draw back I have heard of

to those who have not used it.I think if you do a
search you will find women use it often too. AB and

Sorry Randy, but I have to agree with Sleestack.
That is a rather drastic step to take. I know things
look bleak right now but hang in there. Chuck can't do
his own yet either. But we keep at it. There are days
when I don't have to do a thing. He just goes. We have
been using the Theravac mini enema things and they
help. Insurance won't cover it but they are worth the
cost. He was not a regular person to begin with so it
has been hard "Training" him to go. Right now he goes
twice a week. I ust think you could be making a big
mistake if you did that. Give it some hard hard thought.
There has got to be a better way. Can I ask who helps
you? Maybe a better chair would be something to look
into. Or one that has a pail that you can use in
another room, one that has more room for you to work in.
Sorry if I overstepped but think you should really try
some other things before doing something so harsh.
after all, you don't want to go to the hospital for the
pump, that requires a stay as well. <br

different diagnoses now , one doc thinks its the nerve,
another thinks its the bones and nerve, etc..

Hello everyone,My surgeon has asked me to try the
injection of Baclofen,but i just can't bring myself to
doing it.I hate hospitals and all the bull involved,but
like Geri said she would not have the life she has now
without it,well i'm getting that way.I guess part of me
still beleives in a cure and don't want to jepordize
anything.My legs have not really shrank yet,but not much
there to shrink,i had chicken legs to start with,but
they were strong.People said i looked like a
grasshopper LOL.<br
cover is all i have known,so i guess i'm used to to
it.Only thing that wears out on mine is the bottom
rubberized part to hold it in place.So far no tears on the
top.I'm trying to think how the Jay cover was but
forget,only had it for a 2-3 months and traded it for the
Roho.<br
would like to have a colostromy.My BP is a real
hassle.I can't do my own yet,mostly my fault,but a small
bathroom and a not so suportive toilet chair doesn't
help.Then i get the spasms about fall out of the toilet
chair.Then the spasms make my belly feel full and then
scared to to move much with out having a
accident,specially if getting close to the time for the BP.The not
knowing part is the killer.Well this is nothing you all

Geri is right, you could try the pump and I am
confidant that you will be chomping at the bit to have it
implanted right away because the benefits far outweigh any
pitfalls. The will do a spinal tap to inject the lyorasol
(liquid baclofen) directly into the spine. I had to ait a
week after the trial to get the pump and then had to
work up to the correct dose and this may sound corney,
but my pump has saved my life. I was living to cath
every day. My spasms were so bad I was really on the
edge. I would urge anyone with spasms that interfere
with daily living to check it out. The only time I
even think about my pump is at refill and when I have
a bathing suit on...and I still sunbath in a
bikini.<br

set up to a 7 in 1 remote from radio shack. It makes
life a lot easier-not to mention safer. :) You can use
it to control your Tv, Cd player, Vcr, etc also. You
have to use x-10 modules in the wall light switches. I
bought mine from a place called Universal Electronics
but I'm pretty sure you can get them at Radio Shack
too. You'll also need a Command Center to communicate
with the x-10's- (Plug N' Power box is the Radio Shack
brand). If you're interested, let me know if you need any
more information.<br

You'd just die....My daughter loves black and
about everything she has and wears is either black or
purple. Black chair, shoes, slacks, shirt and every thing
trimmed in black. She even saw a purple chair and thought
if she was a millionaire she would have it for the
days she wanted to feel zanny or free spirit. But
decided purple every day wasn't her style. I was some
what irritated at the unconcern I was treated with the
last time I called Roho. It was like we don't make
them anymore and tough ...just use what we make now.
Not very helpful or sympathic. I would think they
would want to sell what the buyers preferred. Then
again I figured maybe my daughter was one of the few
that had such preferences. Glad to hear there are more
that aren't satisified with the new covers. Probably
not NEW..because I've been with this problem now for
quite a few years. I am thinking about all I'm going to
voice in my complaint to them..Hope others will do the
same so maybe they will make some of the older type
covers for those of us who perfer to not sit so such a

Neurontin, not 18,000! The pump has been the only reason I
have continued to work, and quite possibly stay on tis
planet. The "old" way was not acceptable. You know you
can "test" the pump? They do an injection, and if you
get agood response, THEN you decide if you want it.
Sort of like a test drive! For me, qualtiy of life is
worth everything. I don't LIKE it in my tummy, but I
sleep much better knowing it is there!<br
(sythetic morphine?)helped a little, which is why we think
adding morphine to the baclofen may really help. With
the pump you can have these "meds" without all the
side effects. I did the "math" on my baclofen dosage
the other day. Old oral dose 120 mg day (didn't do
shi_) translates into 120,000 micrograms. I am now at
640 micrograms per day in the pump. And it goes
straight to the source. Not to my brain, liver, etc. etc.
I guess I can't say enough about my pump. I should
sell them!<br
a bit, started to cut back when the weight started
to creep up, then I started neurontin. So when I
would go out and have 3-4 beers or wine, I got very ill
(vomiting, etc) couldn't figure out why,. just thought my
tolerance was way down, Well, duh, Neurontin. (not being a
person who had taken much medication in my short (45 yr)
life, I didn't make the correlation for about 8
months!) I find I can have 2 and be ok, so that is what I
do.<br
smaller pump. Of course it holds less, so fills are more
often, but I am dying to get it! I will be 3 yrs with
pump in April. They have two noew ones, I don't
remember the features of the other. ( you must have the
2,000 strength at an 800 mk dose, when I switched they
didn't allow for the time it would take to get thru the
catheter, so I spent 96 hours of pure hell ) ANOTHER screw
up I forget about!<br
write a very long leter to my Dr to re-imburse me for
my trip, and maybe the fact that I lost about a
month of my life! I have an appt with a new
physiatrist, and now have the "pain" Dr handling my pump. So I
want to wait till a) all is finally ok and b) I have
all new Drs, so I wont' have to go back to the other.
Actually in analyzing alot of her advice and decisions, I
am not sure why I stayed this long.<br
you're still around, and doing well. I will say AGAIN,
that you might want to coniser "trying" the pump. It
is so nice to test it, then really feel and know how
godd it is for your legs to relax and calm down. Keep
on "truckin"....<br
using heavier material for sewing? like a light weight
upholstery type fabric? With a bit of a weave, so it will
give a little? I have often thought of finding such a
fabric and having new covers made. Black is
ugly!<br

Hey Geri, I always get nervous when I hear of
problems with pumps. But I have had none (Knock on wood)
since right after I got it implanted. I am almost due
for a battery change, probably in the next six months
or so. I have recently had quite a bit more
spasticity, we've had to increase by 20% the last two
times.I'm up to 800 mks per day. My urologist explained
that bladder spasms are very different and unless your
spasms are REALLY bad they don't effect your bladder.
Like when your pump was wacked out?! I get both, but
the baclofen takes care of my bladder unless I have
an infection. Sorry you had the prolems, did you
decide whether or not to persue having the dr pay for
your trip?<br

Welcome back Geri,sounds like you have had quite
the ordeal the past month or so.Back in the beginning
for me,i think it was right after i was released from
rehab,i was prescribed the Neurontin,got it home and read
all the side effects and chickened out on taking
it.It was for the burning pain i have.I ended up just
living with that.Setting makes my butt burn,laying down
makes my legs and back burn,also i get a nervous twitch
at times,specially if something startles me or the
dog barks for no reason,weird or normal?.<br
spasms are no better,if anything getting worse.Had a
spastic bladder for about 10 days straight,it finnially
went away and knock on wood is still ok.Was really
loading up on Ditropan,Detrol,and Valium,no infection,or
well no signs of one.<br
sounds interesting,i'm classified as complete,so you
reckon this is good or bad?.I don't seem to get real
nautious or sick feeling,but do sometimes,no reason for it
that i can find.Used to be before my injury i would
get it more,so one good thing of not feeling i
guess.<br
are increasing,so far the only thing that controls
them is a few stiff drinks,then i as limber as a wet
rag.I just can seem to bring myself to try the
pump,starting to hear more and more bad stories here and there
about it.Also i beleive if i get my rods out,it might
help,from what i read,it's about a 50/50 yes and no
answer.<br
to town to get some prescriptions picked up,got
there and the drive thru was closed,so guess i'm going
back today,just earlier,well have a great

Thanks Geri..I will check the Stimulite cover
out. I have called the roho co. in Ill. and they have
merged with another Co. and still no luck. Contacted a
few distributors and no good either. Some are looking
for the cover for me. I wonder how many people don't
like the new covers. If everyone would call and
request the old type maybe they'd make them again. I
tried to recover her top to the cushion with double

circulation. Had my pump messed up (set incorrectly) before my
trip to Hawaii, so it really ruined my trip, and the
entire month, trying to get dosage back up to the
ususal. I had them giving my several different meds to
try to compensate for the lack of intrathecal
baclofen. Interesting to note that, I never had bladders
spasms, but as my spasms in general increased, I had
them. Now that they are more under control, no
more.<br
was complaining of forgetfulness, and some lack of
focus ( I was taking 240 to 3000 mg/day) It was
presecribed for the burning pain. It helps a bit, but what it
really did, was compliment the baclofen, and help ALOT
with spasms. 24 minute after taking one, my legs
RELAX! Very noticeably!<br
drowsiness, etc, I get a little dip in energy at about 30
minute past dose, it lasts about 15 minutes. But it has
been a life saver! When I quit taking it at night and
took Zanaflex, or Valium, that's when I had bladder
spasms. What a shocker!<br
(oxycontin) found it to do the same thing, decrease spasms.
Because it was decreasing the pain, and they are probalby
the biggest cause of my spasms.<br
anthesiologist in Hawaii who suggested it, actually his thought
was to be used in the pump. FINALLY got in to see one
here, my next refill (Jan 21) we are going to put a
little morphine in with the baclofen, and do trial and
error from there. <br
I am getting increased burnig pain, and spasms
after 3.5 years.<br
she explained it as axoms trying to reconnect, but
not doing a very good job, and that it commonly
causes the increases. Said it is not unusal in
incompletes.<br
must be some medical problem that I couldn't feel
(bladder, kidney, etc) so have had ultra sounds and they
did find gall stones. They probably are not the
problem, but I was willing to have them taken out in case.
Now that I know this, I can monitor them. I was told
that nausea and indigestion would be indicators of a
problem. While in Fl last week I suffered from alot of
that (not the flu) finally figured out it was pain
induced, so upped my neurontin which Dr had cut back, and
that helped alot. Figured I have been on the high dose
for a year, and taking it till we figure this stuff
out won't kill me. I was also told that it is often
taken at 5000 mg per day for pain. I think I might
forget my name then, tho'<br

One of my cushion covers from an old Stimulite cover
fit my Roho perfectly. They have a a slim line, and a
thicker one . the one for the thicker cushions might fit.
Maybe you could find a dealer, and try one ofd the
covers on her cushion, then order from them. If there
are none i your area, it could surely be done by
phone. Those covers are much better than ROHO. geri

i've been a quad for 3 1/2 years. i am 98% sure this sweating is not
from being disreflexic as i usually don't sweat as bad and i get the
goose bumps with it.
this just pure sweating, like somebody pored water over my head. hs
anybody come across this besides autonomic disreflexia? has anybody
heard of post traumatic syringomyelia or post traumatic tethered
spinal cord ?

i am a 34 yr old c-5 quad. Almost 2 weeks ago i started sweating
profusely, it just drips off me. it mostly comes on when i sit up and
lasts about 3 hours before it calms down. of course by then i've
changed my shirt 2 or 3 times. does anybody know what this is from
or have experienced it yourself?

I have been looking for a roho cover for a 15x15
8 bulb roho cushion for a long time. I called the
roho factory and all the outlets I could and they
don't make them anymore and no one had or could tell me
where to get one. Does anyone have one that they would
sell, I could borrow or beg...lol...It is the old style
that is made from material like double knit. (if you
know what I mean)..these new ones are slick material
and my daughter doesn't like them. Her first cushion
was in 1982 and I can't remember the last time she
got one around 1985 I think. I have mended and mended
and even tried to make one from scratch that would
equal it...It has just about seen it's days. Would
trade a new never used cover or pay for one if anyone
has one of these old ones..Even if it has been used
and not in the best shape but useable I would love to

Hi All,

I am supposed to have a docs appt on or before the 8th of July as my meds run out on the 7th. They are telling me the first available is the 15th. I tried to get some meds before the 8th but its not happening. When I stated that I would clearly be in withdrawls by the 15th and asked if there is someone there who could tell me what to do about that, how to manage that, I was told someone would call me back. It's not happenning. Does anyone know of a good PM in FLA? I really need one and fastthat is not procedure oriented. My back has been cut and shot up enough and I dont want another hand laid on it. The medical management was going fine until they decided to intentionally put me in withdrawls. Thanks for any help.

I was out walking my dog this afternoon and experienced a strange
thunderstorm.... Then happened upon the President in a field about to make
a speech...

My urologist keeps telling me to drink more
cranberry juice as it helps with UTI's, so I wonder if it's
that Donna. I hate cranberry juice so I tried the
tablets and they have helped. I still get them, but not
as often. I am able to void without cathing, the
only problem is I can't tell when my bladder is empty
so UTI's were my constant companion until I started
taking the cranberry tablets..sounds like a
commercial.:)

Maybe keep track of what you're eating, Chuck and
Karen. If the food is salty you might retain water. Fast
food is usually really salty. Also check the feet. Do
they get swollen more during these times? I wear
support socks all the time, since the pulmonary embolism
last year. I don't have bladder spasms normally, but I
do have a stricture that flairs up sometimes. When
it does, I install a foley that's larger than the
intermittant catheters that I use and leave it in for a week
or ten days. During that time, I do get bladder
spasms, and they're MEAN! If I drink a beer, my bladder
tells me to KNOCK IT OFF!!!! After removing the foley,
it takes a few days to return to normal (for me???)
and I go on about my business. Hope this helps ya

Seems like he will void well for a while then all of a
sudden no matter how much he drinks we get very little.
He doesn't seem to have any infection. Any ideas?

lots of times it is dark, he drinks stuff and still

Hmmmmm,exactly.i just delete what i don't want to read and move on.i learned long ago when i was first Injured that i had to adjust and move on with life and have as much fun as i could,and enjoy as full of a life as i possibly could,now i just enjoy life and all it has to offer,despite almost constant pain in my back and in my spine,i manage to keep a smile on my face.and for everyones information a "doctor" and i use that term loosely,wanted to implant a Spinal Cord Stimulator in my spine,he did,all the while i was losing blood and he didn't think a transfusion was necessary,thank God Family member's were there and got hostile and demanded he transfuse,my Father gave me some of his blood,and when he started inserting the SCS,lets just say i understood why they said not to eat anything after midnight,and he precipitated Severe Nerve damage and caused a disease in there "Spinal Arachnoiditis" Google it,because he injected oil based myelographic dye not once but 3 times.

epilogue=i found out he screwed up 6 other people with this operation,and now i deal with chronic,intractable pain that will put me in a wheelchair eventually,i fight to stay out of one now with aggressive treatment,nerve blocks,ultram 50's for pain and therapy consisting of whirlpool treatment's and taking Vitamin B-6,which control's the central nervous system and calms it down some,anyone here also take Ativan to sleep???My point is;it has not stopped me from living,and having a good laugh ever so often is wonderful "therapy",nice to meet everyone,my name is Jim,i am 6'6" height,dark hair,hazel eyes,mustache and i am the Guy on the Walking Cane over by the corner. My take on this one is somewhat with Liz. I do love a good joke but would prefer to get them from people I know on a personal level. I don't have a "Humor Void" either. Believe me, I've seen and sent a few that would get the pope pissed off. But there are some in the spinalcordinjury group that don't operate the computer with the greatest of ease and to sift jokes would be a challenge for them. Not what they came here for.

I dind't come here to read jokes, I came here to give and get support. And for you it may be easy to just press delete, but not so easy for me. I have the list sent in digest mode, which means I have to search through all the pointless joke messages just to find that one email that actually matters. Hello everyone,ya at times i'm on lot of pills to
keep from leaking,but then after it quits i can get by
without any.Like yesterday,i took 3 ditropans and 1
detrol and leaked,but i made it throuhg the nite without
leaking,so maybe i can start backing down now.I go see my
Urologist about 2-3 times a year,get a yearly ultrasound
etc.The Dr. told me to Titrate the dose,which he says is
to change the dosage to when needed,on a normal dayi
take 2 ditropans and 1-2 valiums.No don't have any
pain with the leaking,just back pain which i have
everyday.I would love to not have to take the meds,but don't
really have any choice.This leaking spell has lasted
longer than the rest and usually happens maybe once a
month.Well thanks for all the help,Randy

DIet is the key. I used to use the suppsoitories and stool softners, but then I
learned that I could do it myself by regulating my diet. It's much more
convienant for me.

Hi Kathy,no don't really have a problem,but it
seems every weather change,specially when it gets cold
i start leaking.Knock on wood,i don't belive i have
a UTI,urine is clear and loks ok to me,no temp
either.Like last nite when i leaked,i had taken 2
ditropans,and 1 Detrol already that day,so shouldn't have
leaked.When leaking i take 4-5 Ditropans and 2-3 Detrols a
day(24 hrs)Only supposed to take no more than 2 Detrols
i was told,also take Valium about 2-4 times a day
when leaking.90% of the time i'm ok.I think my main
reason for having to wake up in the middle of the nite
is fluid settles in my legs and feet,and come out
when i lay down,they don't looked swelled or
anything,at least my boots come off easy most the time.How
many XL'S are you taking a day?.I forgot to ask for a
prescription for tem a couple weeks ago when i went to my
Urologist.When i start getting my leaking spells,i'm proably
going to have to start wearing a bag.<br
the advice,still learning here,like i have said a
1000 times,i learn something new each day.<br
might make chat tonite,no plans on going out yet,maybe
around 8-9 pm for chat?Later, Randy who has lots leaks
this week,cushion and bladder now,whats next?
