and UTI'S .. i also am haveing a hard time loseing weight so any
hints on that also will be a great help thanks alot guy's
David
David,
I can say that the only way to lose weight, since we can't exercise the same way we use to anymore, is to learn how to count calories and reduce the amount of calories and increase your daily activity. I have often been able to gain and lose weight as I chose however that's become more difficult as I've been Para T-8 T-11. I am now constantly fighting it although some times I just have to eat more because my body needs it. I'm probably ten pounds more than I was before the SCI. I know many people have gained a considerable amount of weight once they have a SCI and that's unfortunate. I've often considered on writing a book on how to maintain your weight or lose weight once you have a SCI. I learned many years ago how to control my weight by simply doing more activities that burn calories and also reducing calories. It truly is that simple. You might think you can't because you are too hungry to just eat the little portions you do but if you drink a full glass of
water you'll find that the hunger pains go away much of the time. I hope this information helps you.
Regards,
Brian
Sticking with the country theme here! :o) This is
actually Punkin22. I've decided to change my ID to
Space_Cadet93 because it better suits my current state of mind.
LOL Just wanted to let you guys know.
Larry you play cowboy way to much! Hi to all my old friends and also hi to the
new ones I hope to make...Kathy
Well, the wind blew all day from the east
yesterday, now it's blowin' from the west and northwest at
about 45 mph with gusts to 54 mph. We take off tomorrow
with the camper, to the southwest. Hope the wind ain't
blowin then. Betty, it won't be too bad on the lake,
just take plenty of warm clothing. The days will
probably be really nice and the nights will be cold. We'll
have to call and set up a time to meet ya'll. Randy,
sweet corn, YUM YUM. I love sweet corn. Linda buys
frozen corn from a food supply house that's about as
close to sweet corn on the cob as we've found. It's
called "Fancy Candy Corn". Take care all. <)(:o)

Dorla, I didn't know that about calcium not being
needed, but it makes good sense...Dominique, last
December I had some kidney stones removed, I asked what
was a sign of trouble of any kind and was told blood
in the urine, but as they say there can be all kinds
of causes. I asked what the best thing to do was to
prevent, and was told drink water till you want to
explode. I know I don't drink enough...Larry, there's a
name for watering in 50 mph winds--it's called a
hurricane lol Yeah I kinda figured we might get to do some
ice skating in Idaho, now you tell me of the First
Frost event--guess I'll bring my muchluks abd earmuffs
:>)...Sorry you didn't do better on the boat Randy. Which one
did you go on? I went for my first ride on the Harley
yesterday, brave me :>)...Cindiers, I'll try to make it
to the chat...Betty
Hello everyone,i never thought about the stones
causing some blood, but makes sense.I had a real little
one about a year ago,was cathing and all was going
well,then it just stopped,so i tinkered with it,still
nothing,so i pulled it out.Well stuck in the opening was a
little piece of something. So i carefully emptied the
cath, and got the piece out,it was like a hard piece of
dirt,so i would guess it was a stone.Never had any
problem since.I go in once a yr for a renal and
ultrasound of my bladder and other things to be sure.<br
All this talk of sweet corn is making me hungary for
some.I see there is a few people now with corn
ready, need to go buy nme some, sad thing for a farmer to have
to buy sweet corn.<br
yard Lo,did you get wet,or was you upwind?.Boat trip
yesterday was fun,but no i didn't win,still fun
though,wasn't as lucky as i thought i was LOL.<br
much new to tell from here, still hot and dry,but it
does cool down at nite now, less humid now too,Later
Randy
Do the lakes in Montana get cold in September?
Well,,,,, there's a rod run in Missoula in September and
they call it the "First Frost Rod Run". Give ya an
indication? LOL. Well, ya don't have to go swimmin', Betty.
Just drop a line in the lake and catch a nice trout
for dinner. Linda's trying to water the lawn today,
so it will survive while we're in Simms. Ever try to
water in 50 mph winds? LOL
Hi Dominique,i too have that happen sometimes,i
think it is when i get a little to much in a hurry and
maybe not enough lube.Sometimes i hit resistence as
they called in rehab, but it will finnally go
through.Sometimes my urine gets bloody looking, not blood red,but
the combo of red and yellow makes orange. As for being
concerned,i would say yes,but i hate going to the dr.As long
as it quits you should be OK.But if you have blood
everytime,i would definatlly go see your Dr.I can't tell for
sure but i think i'm getting a UTI,no fever or cloudy
urine, but spasms are worse and my test strips show one,but
heck there never right, they show false positives all
the time.I'm waiting til tommorow and see what i'm
like, then go to the good Dr.Wished i could help more,Randy
Hello Everyone,Sounds fun at the Cowboy
shoot, sounds like something i should try sometime.Good Luck
!!!!.Hello Cinders, sorry to hear of the possable sore,i had
one on my tailbone during rehab, took me 6 months or
meore to get over it.It got out of hand and they didn't
treat it right, finally my local dr. surgeon got me
fixed up.No rain, but what else is new in the little
dessert here.Sure hope there is sweet corn this year
Betty,i'm addicted to it too,we never got any planted
ourselves,i was in charge of that before and if i don't do it
it don't get planted.Dad will not take the time to
plant it,but he loves to eat it.Well i'm off to the
boat,feel lucky today,the date for one,7/7/99?.See y'all
later,Randy
Nice to meet you, Cindie. I live in Havre, I'm a
L-1 incomplete, 16 years post, 51 years old. I worked
in Libby for several months right out of high
school. Hated all the snow. LOL I just retired from
Montana Power Company in December, '98. Loving retirement
and looking forward to exploring some of this great

called cowboy action shooting, and it's so fun, I'm
surprised it's not illegal. LOL YEE HAA
Isn't this a lovely topic ?<br
intermittently, and I have seen blood in my urine recently. It
happens once or twice then goes away then comes back.
It's pretty freaky to see red going thru the catheter.
It's happened three times in the lst 3 weeks or so.
Any idea? Should I be concerned ?<br
tips,<br
<EOM>
Hello,<br
havent been around too much lately. Mainly having
trouble with a sore butt and a small scratch I got from
my wheelchair brake. Happens alot to me. Thought I
need to lay low for awhile, so it wouldnt turn into a
bed sore. Never had one and dont wish to have one.
<br
with all? Hi Betty nice to see you as always. Randy,
was wondering if you got any rain over your way for
your crops? I sure hope so. <br
we have been having alot of rain. Maybe three days
ago we had such a bad storm, we got 6inches of rain
in 7 hours. It was something else. <br
flooding and damaged roads, houses, trees, lines down,
etc. I live up over the hill so only got the rain up
here no flooding. Now its nice and great weather
coming. You know ever since meeting you, every time it
rains I hope it comes your way. ;-) Hope all on the

Gator ot ride in and see the show.Last year i got brave
and tried to wheel it all,it was muddy and just about
wore my self out.I think the show is on like 20-25

resist.Guess that is what the chlorine is for.I know someone
who just tried out the no Carbs diet, she has lost 8
lbs in 1 week,i'm trying it myself. But on my

hey Brian
I'm a 47 yr old t-11 para just under 2yrs post so I'm still a newbie
at the sex thing. Just like you I felt like a virgin all over again,
not many people get that chance. It made it kind of exciting. In the
truth being stranger than fiction dept my "social" life is better now
than before. I guess my attitude about sex changed there is no more
slam bam. I've been asked quite often if I still can..I never
hesitate in telling whoever asks that I can but it's different more
intimate sex. Viagra does help me keep it up but it's more involved
than that, what got me off before doesn't work for me now so there is
a lot of exploring and experimenting to find those new G-spots. It
takes a partner with the right attitude and willingness to keep
trying different things. I have yet to get off myself, but it's been
so close that I'm not gonna give up yet. Besides in a lot of sci
articles I've read they say repetitve motion helps re-establish
connections so I'll repeat it it until I get it right. But in the
meantime nobody has left unsatisfied either. here are a list of
sights that might be helpful

Wanted to tell dkosker about foleys. Usually
everyone is sensitive about "their" way, but I will post
again how I handle cathing.<br
foley, plug it, and have a very nice day! I can drain it
in the car (into a gatorade bottle) in a ladies
dressing room, someone's bedroom when the bathrom is not
accessible. And then enpty the bottle later, or outside, or
ask a friend to carry it to the bathroom. I just keep
an extra little bag for the bottle in the "hammock"
under my chair. I am able to drink AN"YTHING and
everything I want. During the day I empty my bladder about
every hour and a half. Drink TONS of diet coke. If you
need foleys, (14frenh) or plugs, I have tons
(Dominique, I have NOT gotten to the post office to mail the
pkg, but have not forgotten about you!)<br
foley tube I just tuck up in my underwear. It is easy
to lower my pants (I wear all stretch leggings or
stretch shorts) and just empty away. It has been my only
soution (salvation) I am all over town in a given day,
never the same bathroom options, and travel quite a
bit. When I went to the lake recently, people could
jump in the water to pee, or hit the shore, not me. I
drained in a bottle with a towel on my lap, and nobody
ever noticed!<br
my biggest issues with SCI (ok, after a few other
things)<br
tell, from when I crashed 3 years ago. Loss of muscle
in legs, butt, etc. Actually my face is a bit
thinner, too. But my tummy!!!!! YUCK! I try
everything.<br
to ride my arm bike (outdoor) as much as possible,
which leaves only weekends for me. And with 110+ temps
here in AZ, that leaves early morning only. Since I
always seem to need to catch up on sleep on the
weekends, I have been slacking a bit.<br
what I eat. Try to stay away completely from carbs,
but do have a bowl of fibre cereal every morning
(religiously) for obvious reasons!<br
hour! Beer can really do it to you!<br
herbal "metabloism increaser" recently. The active
ingredient is Ma huang. There are many on the market. Don't
bother with the expensive ones (12.99) I really felt an
increased energy boost, so it must be doing something to my
metabolsim.<br
days getting lots done in my house and yard. Never
seem to have the time, and am looking forward to it.
And some pool tiem, working on my tan..<br
Hey Dave and Nick,
hope your Christmas was great! Yeah, the disabilities Studies
program is all about improving life for PWD...socially, politically,
environmentally, economically, and I am studying these topics, but
focusing on Health Promotion and Dis.

My daughter weighed 105 at the time of her
accident and maintained around 110 until this past year.
She was having so much trouble with UTI's every month
that she opted for a shot to keep the monthly cycle
away. (guess that is the best way to say it) It's side
effect is weight gain and she has put on about 20 pounds
and it all went on her belly. The only way she can
loose weight is starve herself. I don't recommend that
to anybody and I can't keep her from doing it. She
will only eat one salad a day. Makes her grumpy too.
lol. She says exercises help speed up the metabolism
(spelling?) and helps with weight control. About all she can
do is lift small weights with her arms or use an
exercise thing that is similiar to bicycle pedals at
shoulder height and turn them with your hands as you would
a bicycle's pedals with your feet. She has worked
with PT and used this exercise to speed her heart rate
which is supposed to excelerate metabolism. Any
exercise you are physically able to do would help. Not
just burning calories but the heart rate and
metabolism thing is the key. (we have been told) Actually I
think weight problem is a problem we all share. Able
and Unabled..lol Dorla
Wondered if I made it understandable. She takes
the foley tube outside her underpants in the crotch
area and brings the end up to her waist band. She
usually wears large shirts that come down to her lap for
she has developed a "pot gut" and wants to hide it.
lol So there is nothing on the legs and she can even
wear short shorts. <br
My daughter and I watched the video and between
the two of us we found those things to pick at about
the new chair. That was the first thing she said."I'm
fraid of falling and that is a long ways to fall." It
said it balances itself but I bet it would be kind of
scarey at first. I have got in Lezlie's chair and got
into her van with the lift and I felt scared. It gave
me a twinge in my stomach I know it is safe for she
does it all the time but first time has got to feel
funny. Anyway it did for me. When you have time you
really ought to take a look at it and just see how it
operates and features of the chair itself. She also was
concerned about the foot pedals. She uses the full size
pedals and it looked like those pedals were very small
and positioned in the very middle. She is very
interested though for the love of her life is outside doing
things. Dorla
interesting program indeed troy. hopefully a portion of studies includes the student spending a few months in a wheelchair and going out in public to find his/her way around. there's no substitute for experience.
what will you be doing with your degree, making things better for the rest of us? lobying the legislature for better bennies and more reasonable medical and drug support?
go for it troy,
dave

intermit cath my self too, wore a bag one nite while in bed
when i first got a spastic bladder 4 months after my
wreck.the bag system just was too much of a pain for me.I
wear jeans all the time so it wouldn't be a big deal
hiding it if i did wear a bag.Seems on New Mobilty
message board about a month ago, some posted a question
about shorts and a leg bag.You may be able to go
throuhg the archives and find it.It is going to be very
Hot here too, already almost 90 at 11 am est time

There is a video of the new chair at
<a href=http://www.msnbc.com/news/285231.asp
target=new
entering the van with the
chair but a raised top would solve that problem but
then you have the problem of low ceiling parking
ramps. Also the floors of vans can be lowered but I
wonder if they can be lowered that much. Would if fit
under tables and desks? My daughter has posturing pads
in her chair and this chair looked pretty open.
Anyone got any answers to these concerns? I didn't get
to see the tv show only the web site video. I doubt
we'll have to worry about them for the price is out of
reach for us. There is a survey to fill out if you got
to the web site. Dorla

Months later I started getting movement back. Now I'm able to walk
with forarm crutches. But, I still have problems with bladder, bowel,
and muscle spasms. A neighbor introduced me to glyconutrients. After
taking them for three months I have really noticed a difference. My
bowels are on track, and I hardly have a UTI any more. Also my muscle
spasms are not as bad. Glyconutrients give the body what it needs to
heal itself and it has really helped me. I would suggest it to
everybody. This has really helped me and if anybody wants more
information, please email me.

Railone my daughter is 36 soon to be 37. She's
been in the chair 17 years this 6th of July. We always
celebrate the anniversary with cards, gifts, and a family
meal as we feel that is the birth of her new life in
the chair and celebrate her life for we were told she
wouldn't live. We are so happy that she is still with us.
Takes something like that to appreciate people more and
know the real values in life. We try to always
approach the positive side instead of all the negative
things that go with it. That year they had fireworks and
the usual celebrations on the 5th and we all go to
them as a family and spend the whole day with parades,
food, entertainment and fireworks at the end. Always
have since the kids were young and still do. Now we
have almost grown grandchildren and they still go with
us. The following day my daughter life guarded at a
pool in a neighboring town and comming home in our car
a dog dashed out in front of her and she took the
ditch to avoid hitting the dog and wasn't wearing her
seat belt. The car wasn't damaged but it threw her
against the passenger door and broke her neck at C 5/6.
It was about 2 hours before a passerby found her.
They took her by land ambulance to a nearby hospital
and then life flight flew her to the University of
Iowa. We would shed tears for many years whenever we
saw or heard the helicopter go over. We always knew
that someones life was on the edge. Now they air care
all kinds of patients. Back then they only took the
very critical ones. Our daughter is comming home
tonight from her apartment and we will be celebrating the
same old way. She will be here for 7 day visit. She
said she wants frog legs and steaks on the grill.

Hello everyone,well it's almost the 4th,but seems
everyone is celebrating tonite or tommorow nite.No big
partys or cookouts yet here that i know of,sounds like a
boring weekend for me.Tonite is the big Red White and
Boom fireworks show in Columbus,do you go to that
Betty?.Our fireworks are Sunday nite here,so someone is
celebrating on the actual 4th.On the power chair subject,i
see myself giving in someday on getting one, right now
though feel like i should stay in the manual.I liked
that new chair, but way too high priced for me.I
wuished i had a power chair today,my back and shoulder
has been bothering me,must of slept wrong or threw
somehting out,pretty sore.Well Happy 4th to everyone,Randy
WHERE IS EVERYONE GOING NOW
Dorla, what you said rings sooo true, The power
chair gave me my freedom and I think I know exactly how
your daughter feels. Do you mind my asking old she is?
It's like becoming your own person again and yes to go
back to being pushed seems unthinkable. It is harder
to get into people's house with the power chair and
Ed once suggested we go visiting with the manual,
but that is something I just don't want to do
anymore. Of couse I never could push the manual, I had to
be pushed all the time--so this is all the
difference in the world--yes outdoors, up and down hills,
puts back the fun in life...Randy, I didn't see the
show but I sure wish I had--they are always coming up
with something new--hard to imagine a chair that
climbs stairs--even harder to imagine coming up with the
20,000 bucks!...Actually I think the Fourth celebration
is on the third here in "Picktown"--at least that is
what I read in the papers. I took it for granted that
the party was on the Fourth cause it's always on the
Fourth but the local paper said the Fourth was the
third!!--I am totally confused and will have to lie down for
a while :>)...Take care, Betty
I missed the Dateline show last nite that showed
a new wheelchair design,it can climb stairs,go
down<br
machine,but pricey,20,000 bucks.Heres is a link to<br

Hello everyone, well we did get a little shower
Sunday,3-7 tenths total,it will help but wee needs lots
more, they say corn in it's growing stage now needs a inch a
week, were way below that. The 7 tenths only got about 10% of
our farms.<br
we would get some much needed rain.Early this spring
i got caught in town during a storm,i was a liitle
scared, tearing my chair apart and handling all that metal with
lightning close by,but i made it,and never got soaked to
bad.<br
there shiny stuff,LOL.<br
reply about something, but i forget what.I read all the
recent posts aand thought i would try to reply to all at
once, guess my ,memory is going too.Anyone have big plans for
the 4th?.Not much planened here yet.Talk to you all
later,Randy
Tomco Conversions makes motorcycles accessible
for wheelchairs and adapted so you can even drive
them. (For all the motorcycle fans)..For everyone out
there in manual chairs...I have heard that it is whimpy
to have electric chairs but I know two people here
in our home town that have spent most of their lives
in manual chairs and now they are having so much
trouble with their shoulders and tendonitis in their
hands that they have lost the ability to do some of the
cares and chores of daily living that they should be
able to do. The years of strenious pushing finally
took it's toll. It might be whimmpy to some but it's
like the turtle and the hare--The turtle lasted and
got there and the hare didn't make it. I know it's
hard to get insurance to pay for electric chairs too.
We went through that. The first chair my daughter
got was a manual and she was so limited in activites
independently and had to be pushed to do a lot of things. She
got her electric and now she goes up and down fishing
banks and tends a garden. (all by herself) It was a
blessing for us as well as her. She hates to be pushed
around and her life is outside in the yard and
unaccessible places for a manual chair pushed by herself. She
can go over the ground in her electric that I can't
hardly push or pull her over in her manual. They say she
wears her chairs out and the supplier says they aren't
made to do what she does to them and she just answers
They should be made to take me where I want to go. A
big problem is keeping the mud washed off...lol Dorla
Randy, lol--A Harley chair, now there's a
thought. Yes if Ed had his way he would add chrome and
decals and everything including the vroom, vrooom!! You
know that Harley decal sounds like a good idea, I'm
going to talk to Ed about it--I don't mind a bit if
people think Harley made this chair. We got some good
rain last night, bet you did too, now it is less humid
and gorgeous!!...Dominique, I have Aetna and they
really didn't want to help with the chair but we
eventually convinced them I couldn't handle a manual
anymore...We were super lucky with our May trip to Colo--had
great weather but I know this is the time of year to
come out west--hopefully we will on another
trip...<br
nice all morning with maybe two--ok three drops of
rain. Then when Ed came to pick me up, while we were
waiting for the w/c lift to be lowered it started to pour
and we got drenched--he was either too late or too
early. :>)....Take care, Betty
a while. There's a bunch of new messages that's
what !<br
said before there are miles and miles of
them.<br
conversions ?<br
it 1-1/2 year but I am getting tired ! I dream of a
power chair. BUT, the fly in the ointment is that I
have Kaiser for insurance and they are so very
generous by providing $1,500 a year for durable medical
equipment (this is supposed to cover everything ! then, of
course, they provide me with 48 catheters A YEAR, so
lucky !)<br
beautifull; all the rain that was supposed to go your way,
Randy, came here and stayed here this spring. Now we
have very nice mid 80's days. Not so hot that you have
to have the air condition going, but just right. The
upper 90's are right around the corner though.<br

Hello Dorla and Betty,I thought that Tomco was
the name, guess my memory is till good, well sometimes
at least,other times i forget everything LOL.<br
was realy considering getting a hospital bed but
decide not to.I am so far getting along with my Select
Comfort bed ok.My original intentions wa to inlate the
bed tighter to make it easier to transfer out of.I
did this for a while, but now never bother with the
air pressure,I leave it on 30-35 pounds all the
time, great so far for bed sores, knock on wood.I have to
agree on the power chair, there are times it would be
very nice to have.right now i guess it's more of a
macho man thing pushing myself, which shouldn't be that
way.One thing i know is if i start getting bad shoulders
or arms,i will not hesitate getting a power
chair. Now knowing me if i had a power chair,i would be
tinkering with the motor to get it to go faster, probably
have to add some chrome to it also,LOL,men and there
toys again,Hummm a Harley powered chair???,i do have a
Harley decal on my axle under the chair. You would be
supprised how many people think that Harley made the
thing,specialy with the purple paint.<br
we got more rain on some parts of our farm than we
first thought. We ended up getting 2-7 tenths, with the
most on the far southwestern part of it.Here at my
house i only got a little over a tenth of a inch.Must
be living wrong?.Well have a great week Randy

Randy, It was Ed who pushed me to get a power
chair and it has made a lot of difference in our lives.
I think everyone who needs a wheelchair deserves a
power chair...I got a new hospital bed and I love
it!--It will make it possible for me to transfer to the
chair on my own which I couldn't do before. We had to
take the castors off because otherwise it rolled too
much. I really didn't think it would on the carpet but
the minute I got my chair right up next to the bed it
took off! lol I was afraid to get in, afraid it would
roll away from me and I'd end up on the floor. So Ed
took the castors off and it is as steady as a rock.
When it raises to its full height it is above the
chair but not quite as much as I'd like--so after
taking the castors off which lowered the bed about four
inches we may put in wood blocks to raise it back up an
inch or two. Always rigging--do you find yourself
rigging constantly?--seems that's all we get done around
here :>)...Take care, Betty
I found the web. It's Tomco conversions. All kinds of conversions. They brought
up issues I had never thought about. Even electric back up adaptions. Really
interesting. Thanks for the info. Dorla
Hello Betty,i use a manula chair,have 2 of
them, one has large front casters,i use it for when i'm in
ruff areas,it's a fold up chair,but i think it's hard
to fold up compared to my rigid chair.Guess i got
used to the riggid way and got stuck in a rut so to
speak.Looks to be another hot one today with no rain, just
full of good news aren't i?.Well talk to y'all
later,Randy
can someone please send me the link to where to can withdrawl from this group...im sick and tired of all this spam and porn letters this is suppose to help people with disabilitys but no one is wanting to keep an eye on there stuff then i dont want to be part of this no more
Beth, We also have a steep ramp out our back
deck, it is the only way I get into the house. Actually
it's so steep it's against specifications but our deck
people were ready to "bend" any rule. Thanks goodness it
is short, I go flyging down it now cause I'm used to
it, but when I'm low on power there's no way I'll get
up it...Randy, can't imagine a 25 mph chair, but I
must say when I get going on a good paved bike trail
I'm only going a little less than 5 mph and it seems
soooo slow. Do you have a power chair?...Dorla what you
decribed is fascinating, I never heard of that. It is
something I think i would like that very mcuh. I am getting
too chicken to ride behind Ed even with
armrests...Dominique, are the bike trails around Denver paved, I
imagine they are. My dream is to live near a paved
accesible long bike trail and be able to get on it it
without having to load up in the van...Yes, we need rain
soooo bad, we're watering our brains out! How is the
weather where you all live?...Take care, Betty

Hello Dominique and Dorla,I have saw something
similur to what your talking about dorla,it's o hte web
somewhere whre you can ride the cyycle from the chair,i
think Tomco conversions makes it?.Oh well if i could
walk i would ridee again,wasn't the bikes fault,as i
have told everryone i could got injured working on the
farm or playing softball,it just hpppens and not much
you can do it about prevventing it.Right now as far
as riding,i have no interest in riding if i can't
walk.<br
really thought of it,but we are, can't get enouhg of
anything good.Except rain in Ohio when you need it.<br
Well thanks for the rain wish, hope it works, everyone
have a great weekend,Randy
I just can't imagine being in a wheelchair and in
a motorcycle at the same time...<br
that I am only a paraplegic. Like I tell my husband
there'smonly room for one paraplegic in this family and I'm
it. Do you guys want to become quadraplegic
?<br
in the Summer. I think we took our bikes but can't
really remember. It is a cute town,
definitely.<br
trails. You can bike from the northern suburbs, follow
the Platte river down to the southern suburbs. It is
really neat. The townhome we had bought BI (before
injury) was located by such a trail. Now we aren't since
we bought another house.<br
Denver. Colorado is such a healthy state. Everybody's
into exercise, diet, fresh air, vitamins, etc. etc.
etc.<br
obsessed as Americans when it comes to anything. We do a
lot of things in moderate amount: eat delicious foods
that an American person would think fattening, drink
wine at lunch and dinner (moderately), etc.
<br
Randy....<br
ones!<br
About ten years ago there was a student at the U
of I in Iowa City that had a motorcycle with a side
car. He had modified the side car with a drop down
ramp in the back and tie downs and had converted the
handle bars over to the side car. He drove from the side
car and his passenger would ride on the seat of the
motorcycle. I saw him many times driving it around but never
got up close to really look at it and see exactly how
he had done it. That would be really nice for you
guys to have and enable you to bike together again,
Plus it would be great so they do the driving. I
suppose the side car could be modified to just accomodate
the wheelchair but its always better to drive
yourself. Also with converting the controls to the side car
makes it possible to go by themselves whenever they
want. My daughter is a control freak and prefers to do
it all by herself..wants to be very independent.
Dorla
Hi Beth,i seen a guy at a Harley rodeo the yr i
wrecked,he had his wheelchair in his side car like you
said, but he was riding it,so i never did get to see it
close.I have thought about it,but thats as far as it
got.Kind of scary going 25 mph in a chair,i can see myself
getting thrown out doing that.I do like going down hills
fast, but always on hte look out for holes or bumps. When i
was in Rehab,August97,they tokm some of us to a lake
to watch a sking thing, looked ok to me,but it's not
for me,never was much on watersports, but those people
made it look easy.good idea of the winch for getting
up the ramp,i had thought of that for some
things, but mainly to lift me up to get on the mower.Need a
way o make it move after i get lifted up,like a track
or something on the ceiling,i'm sure it could be
done.Just got home fromthe hospital, had my yearly
ultrasound,i think everything was ok,he did say something
about my bladder, but no details, gues the Dr. needs to
read them and tell me?.Well have a great weekend,i
have family reunion to go to,might go to a tractorpull
tonite at a neighboring county fair, take care Randy
I am unsubscribing to Spinalcordinjury message board... I'm sick and tired of seeing all the Spam ads for porno!
Hi everyone! I have heard that a motorcycle can
be modified for hand controls, and with a sidecar is
easy to ride. Transfer to the bike and throw the
wheelchair in the sidecar. Wm was at a park that had nice
new payment and held on to the back of his friends
motorcyle...got going 25 mph in his wheelchair. Always the thrill
seeker. Glad I wasn't there to watch.<br
adaptive water skiing? Wm just attended a clinic put on by
the rehab center and a group called Team Aquatics.
Everyone had a blast. The ski is about 14 inches wide with
a "basket" you sit in, someone holds the back of
the ski til you get going good. A boat follows behind
with people ready to dive in and help you back on the
ski when you take a spill.<br
ideas. Wm is currently living in an apartment with quite
a steep ramp. He was not able to manuver the ramp
alone so he got an electric winch and attached it to a
4 x 4 post. Now he comes and goes on his own.
Hello Betty,no rain here yet,saw on the news last
nite that a little storm just missed me,one went north
and the other south.Radar now shows the front heading
towards us,but it is weakening like normal. My yard is
just about dead, but i don't care about it,5 acres is
too much to mow, like the vacation of not mowing, only
good thing about a drouhgt.Saw there pumping water
from Alum creek to the hoover resivoir, sid it had been
8 yrs ince they did that.We were dry then too,but
nothing like now,1988 was our last real drought, yields
were cut over half of normal.<br
trip, sounds really nice out west, never been, was going to ride
to Sturgis the si=ummer i wrecked my bike.I have
been to Vegas twice, love it there.<br
go do a rain dance or something, that would be
cute??.Betty i have some pics of the farm and my Harleys on my
For all your feedback. I have the mocassins too
but I think it would be nice to wear real shoes. I
used to love shoes so much, had 30-40 pairs. Now they
just sit in the closet in boxes because I am hoping
against my good judgment that somehow they'll fit me
someday ! I even ordered a pair of gold lace Roman
sandals from Fredericks of Hollywood (I've always wanted
those). I ordered first a size 7 (as I lost a half size
or so since the accident). Too tight. Then I ordered
size 8, still too tight. So I just returned them.
Major bummer.<br
explain my way of cathing in public restrooms (it's
actually the same way I do at home).<br
from Ohio just to get a Harley T-shirt ? Men are
pretty funny animals sometimes !<br
do you get in the pool ? Is there a lift ? I go to a
warm pool that has a lift and the lift is in between
the pool and the jacuzzi (heavenly). <br
work,<br
Hello Geri, the only time i have had to cath in
front of the sink is at home, lots simplier than going
over to the toilet to do it.but when out i try for a
stall,or a remaote corner.Away from home i use the O-Neil
bag system, works out well, has gloves and a napkin to
keep clean.Men do have it easier for cathing, good ol
outside plumbing as the nurses told me.Forgot to comment
on your bees, hope you got them taken care of,i'm or
well used to be allergic to bee stings, not sure if i
still am or not, been a while since i have been
stung.Often wondered what would happen if i got stung and
never knew it?.<br
yet, maybe tommorow they say?.Were not as hot as you
Geri,only 85-90 here.My feet and legs don't really look
swelled, but boy do i caht more at nite after laying down to
sleep, about 2-4 hours after i have layed down,i have to wake
up and cath or i will flood the bed, real pain.<br
The mocosans sound great fro shoes, still like my
boots,i just feel more protected with them because i bump
my feet a lot.<br
again, hospitals are no fun.Well need to get ready,Urologist appt
after lunch,take care Randy
lol--Randy, you know on our trip out west in May
we went to Cheyenne Wyo. for the sole purpose of
buying a Harley T Shirt!! He keeps talking about leather
chaps but none so far--I thought chaps were something
cowboys wore! :>)I haven't been on the bike yet even
though we got armrests just for that purpose--I am a bit
chicken, there is the truth, but my time will come!! Did
you go to the boat?? Hope you got that chance today,
a great day here in Ohio...Betty...Almost forgot,
got another Harley story: Ed and Dan (the Goldinger)
were riding, Dan first. Here comes a Harley with a man
and a women riding--Dan waves and they wave casually
back, arms sort of down. Then they come to Ed and give
Ed the thumbs up! Ed says he's not going to tell Dan
that story...lol!

Hi, I'm an incomplete C5,6,&7 Quad 12/14/98, myself. I was a
climber previous to the accident but not anymore. The only thing I
had control over and the one thing that got me through it all was my
attitude and taking rehab with the one-day-at-a-time approach. It is
a tough road to be on, and you travel it alone, but others have gone
before you. I hope it all works out for you.
Nick.
Helo Betty,Well to answer the question of Harleys
and Hondas rding together, your die hard Harleys guys
kind of frown on it,but most people don't mind at
all,it's the feeling of being free that counts and as long
as you ride is waht counts.I have noticed a lot
Harley guys don't really go out of there way to speak to
non Harley riders,no biggy to me.I had forgot reading
your hubby got the new bike,i bet he is wahing and
waxing it all the time, and his closet if full is Harley
tshirts now and leather, has he got you any leather yet?.I
have never been to the rolling thunder trip before, was
going to but usally busy then.Funny we go from SCI talk
to Harleys.I might go to the boat today?.Haven't
decided yet.Have a great day Randy
I am my husbands care giver, he's been home since 8/30, Doing rehab
at home, going fairly well. We have 4 kids , 3 still at home. Were
doing great. How do you survive all the social security crap? Are
funds are drying up and no end in sight with SS.
Duane's attitude is very positive for what has happened to him, I
didn't think he would want to live like this but he has surprised me
he was a avid hunter, loved to fish, camp and be with his kids. I
know when were though with rehab we will find a way to be able to do
all the things we loved before. Nice to find sights with people who
understand spinal cord injury. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.
Dominique, to answer a few ?. As far as the
"sinkside", yes, I do wear a foley during the day, but Randy
had said he has had to cath in front of the sink. Of
course, being a guy has it's advantages when it comes to
cathing! I "unplug" and drain into a bottle or zip lock,
and have had to do it more than once "sinkside". I
could not exist doing straight cathing duing the day,
don't know how you manage! As far as shoes, I can
really only wear high-top tennis shoes. This keeps the
swelling to a minimum, tho' the legs still swell, but the
feet stay "compressed". As soon as I take my shoes off
at night, the fluid disperses and the feet take
their share, then I am usually in bed soon.<br
No, tho' I someday want to get a convertible. I
really enjoy taking drives, and would love to have one.
I find it hard to justify the expense, though, just
for fun. My truck is company provided, so I try to
keep in mind how much $ that saves me!<br
keeps me up to date on questions..<br
is just that. It was 114 on Sunday. I took my bike
out early, then spent most of the day in the pool.
Only place to be in 114 degrees!<br
I know I haven't posted here in a long time. I
want to say hi to Cindiers and Randy who I know from
New Mobility--and hi to everyone else...Ed traded in
his Goldwing for a Harley this year--well he didn't
exactly trade it even up---we actually lost our butts!
But yes it goes vroom vroom and that's what he
wanted--he said it was either that or a tattoe!! He was
going to go to Rolling Thunder but talked himself out
of it--he and a friend went on a ride instead--his
friend rides a Goldwing--question...Are a Harley and a
Goldwing allowed to ride together??? I'm not sure but
there isn't some sort of regulation against it! :>)
Betty
Good afternood everybody...I started this group the first day of
year..The main reason is because I notice most other groups that deal
with disability have so much spam and promoting there porn like groups
such as gimps gone wild...I think this is do degrading to us that are
disabled,I am sure it don't show a good light on us...
This group will not have this kind of stuff...Were very active with
over 1000 members and over 500 messages per month on the board...Most
of the messages have content and not just idle chat...
No were don't get to graphic and mainly intimacy is not just about
sex..its has more meaning then that..
If you join you must have information on your profile..
I have thought and thought about writing about
the use of accessible stalls. I don't want to offend
anyone and I am able bodied so I don't have the
understanding of the rest of you. My daughter's care taker who
had been with her for almost two years asked her
about proper use of the stalls. She had used the
accessible stall as no one else was in the bathroom and it
was the only one open. All the others were occupied.
When she came out one of the AB poeple really gave her
a tongue lashing for using it. She didn't think she
had done wrong but wanted my daughters opinion.
Lezlie replied that as long as no one was there to use
it she felt it was alright for her to go in but if
there was someone there that needed it she should wait
for the others and give preference to the one who
could only use the accessible stall. My thoughts were
the same until I read your postings and now I have a
different view. I guess you could apply that reasoning to
the parking stalls also. If you don't see any one
there needing to park there you could use it...No No
No...so I guess my thoughts might have been off
key..Another thought had raced through my mind that everyone
has to wait for stalls and it would do no harm for
the person who can only access the accessible stall
to wait until that person was through. Still AB
people should not use it ahead of the person who can
only use the accessible stall. Then I know that when
my daughter feels the urge to go she doesn't have
much time to wait before she has an accident and
accidents are very hard to deal with...So again I turned my
thoughts and decisions around. Again this is such a
wonderful place to learn things. Lezlie has been in a chair
for 17 years and am amazed at the things I have
learned here at these postings. Don't be angry at me for
my erroneous thoughts. I learned my lesson...Dorla
As I was saying to Geri in the previous post, I
only wear skirts. I do have one pair of pants that I
modified by sewing velcro in the crotch. But, but,
but...<br
ankles (regular size). By 10:00 am I acquire sausages
insead of feet. By the end of the day, they really look
ugly; they're purple by the toes and they look like big

shoes (size EE I think) but the first few days I wore
them, I got a big sore on each heel. So then I bought
american indian mocassins. Those are great, because they
hide the big paddles.<br
though I don't feel the heat, I want to wear something

I've been off to a bed vacation making the Drs.

messages posted since I've been gone. Thought I might
commet on the shoes. My daughter wore regular shoes for
quite a while until a helper didn't get the shoe on
correctly and my daughter got sores on both feet. She had
to go to softer shoes and chose indian moccasins.
They come in different colors even. She loves purple
and even found a purple pair. We got her ballet shoes
for x-mas. Black for winter and white for summer. She
wears pants except for very special occasions and her
feet usually look pretty nice. She has a problem with
late day and evening swelling too. Anything over her
arch seems to cut in later in the day as her feet
swell. As for men I don't know unless you would want to
wear those sandals that close with velcro. We love
velcro and found tennis shoes and many others that had
velcro closures. She is very opposed to wearing anything
that is like a house shoe or lap robes for she thinks
it makes her look so invalid and old. I wonder if
her thoughts will change as she ages..ha. Dorla
Dear Liz:
There is some evidence that eating yogurt helps prevent UTIs. Also regular
exercise. I believe both have merit because I used to get four or five UTIs
a year until about a year and a half ago. That's when I started exercising
regularly and eating at least 1/2 cup of yogurt a day. I've been UTI-free
ever since. (I use intermittent cath, about seven times a day). I am an L1
para eight years post. The other big benefit is I've lost 50 pounds!
Anne
Thanks Geri for the shoulder pat. I wanted to
comment on your sinkside story in the bathroom. You mean
emptying your foley right ? You don't mean actual cathing
do you ? I do not wear a foley. I only wear skirts,
which is the way I was dressing BI (before injury).
When I use the restroom I don't even feel comfortable
with the spaces between the door and the frame. I am
sure nobody looks, as I don't look, but I would feel
weird if somebody actually saw me (one my weird
hangups).<br
way Geri.<br
MJ -
You mentioned using an indwelling cathe that had some kind of antibiotics on it?
Tell me more. My hubby has been injured5 yrs, and we've stuggled a few times
with UTI's. The latest one lasting six weeks and took a few different (and
expensive) meds to cure. Besides the treated cathe, do you take any meds for
prevention?

Hi Dominique, you are right about anything almost
with a Harley name sells great, like to have a dollor
for ecery Harley t shirt i have LOL.Sure was funny to
read your talking of Round Up,we use a lot of that
stuff, should own stock in the company, talk about a all around
good chemical. They even have beans and corn resistent
to it now,so thats one way we are cutting down on
chemical use.We do rotate here on our farm, almost every
field is beans one year, corn the next, plus we have a
small rotation of wheat, but only 2-300 acres each
year.Wheat is a good crop for the soil and weed
control, alfalfa is even better, but we don't have any livestock
anymore, plus it's hard to find help to bale.Sounds great on
your house,i am need ing a new washer and dryer
bad, mine are almost doen for,but there 10 yrs old
now, guess it's time.Well good luck on gettting kitchen
back,Randy
Well Randy, sounds like things are getting more
manageable. Tom and I went to the Harley Rally in South
Dakota one summer. It was so much fun. We did not have a
motorcycle, just our TBird and mountain bikes. When we were
in Deadwood we just sat outside and watched the
endless parade of bikes. We even saw old women (I mean
old like in their 60's) riding. Every owner put their
own touch on their bike and we thought that if we
could think of manufacturing something that had the
Harley motif, we could make loads of dough. (Pie in the
sky thinking you know ?)<br
sunny Arizona ? I think I remember that you had bought
a Mustang, is that right ? If so, do you take your
wheelchair apart amd long does that take ? Is it convertible
?<br
agree. Pesticides are a necessity to cut down on the
amount of crop destruction that occurs when critters are
allowed to develop too fast. I think that crop rotation
is also important. I know in France they do
something called "la jachere", which means that you rotate
your crops every 3 years I believe and the 4th year
you let the land rest. I used to do a lot of
gardening and am planning on again, and although I did use
some chemicals, I tried to use non chemical
alternatives such as "the cowboy way" (pulling weeds by hand
instead of using Round Up), companion planting (garlic
and roses to protect from aphids)and strong jets of
water to dislodge the ones that did not mind the
garlic).<br
coming to spend 3 weeks with us and arriving July 9th.
That has set a fire under Tom's butt and he worked
like a madman this weekend. He hung all the kitchen
cabinets (beautiful); we bought a new cooktop, dishwasher,
a sink, etc. All counters will eventually be
covered in granite (just georgous) and I can roll under
the sink and the stove. I am really looking forward
to having my kitchen back.<br
camping...<br
sq ft of floor. I am getting so excited. So talk to
you all later.<br
Well i survived the party,was pretty tame,were
all getting older now,or at least feel that way the
next day.Anyways never got too sad form seeing and
hearing all the bikes,do miss it though,i know if my legs
could move i would hop right on and take off.To me
there isn't anything that sounds better than a well
tuned Harley, well maybe tractorpulling or a drag
race.If you haven't figured out yet,I love loud
exhuasts.Well hope everyone had a enjoyable weekend too.Later
Randy
Hi Wanda,
There has been a lot of talk about SP's over at SCIsexuality. I
have one myself and love it...a few women on that group have them
also. Your "penis envy" remark was funny, SP's seem to be the only
way to go (in my humble opinion) for spontaneous or more natural
sex. Nothing ruins the moment more than cathing before, removing a
foley, condom cath or even some use diapers! Anyway...best of luck,
read the old posts there or just jump in and ask. We're an open
bunch.

Wanda,
I can help you out with a suggestion for a cushion if you are interested. Go
to www.aquilacorp.com and check out both models.
My name is Wanda. I am a 32/Female and I am a T complete. I crushed
my spin in an ATV accident back in March. I have only met men with
SCI and to be honest our situations are very differnt. everything
from urination and dealing with a period to sex and relationships.
I am engaged and live with my fiance' We were engaged only 1 month
before the accident . I am dealing ok but somedays the depression is
really bad.
I just had a super pubic cath put in last wed. Does anyone else have
one???.... I have never had so much penis envy in my life...I tell my
friends to never take being able to pee for granted again...
I was in the hospital for 6 weeks and I am now finished with out
patient rehab.
If anyonne would like to chat with me .. please do so..( going a bit
crazy being home all the time.)
Plus I hate my chair... I had mine picked out for me and it is
awful.. it weighs over 45 lbs. and I cant do sustained wheeies in it
any suggestions on a type and brand that is best. I am para from my
rib cage down and have full use of my arms and hands ( very thanksful
for that).
Thanks ,
Wanda
Wow say that 3 times fast.Boy i would to have to
farm with no chemicals, one thing i know is we wouldn't
be farming 2500 acres.Actually we use less chemicals
today then we did say 25 years ago, most are applied to
the plant it self so there is hardly any that goes in
the water systems.Farmers today are under a lot of
enviromental pressure to be kind to the earth.Organic farming
is making a come back, and yes the prices are high.I
read somewhere that the lawn care buisness's actuallly
apply more chemicals per square foot than farmers
do.Our sprayers today have moniters and computers and
all that good stuff, farming is really hi tech
anymore.Used to be a fun job, still is,but there is no room for
mistakes,not meaning chemical mistakes.Like planting,pricing
and selling and harvest. We have to make every grain
count to stay profitable.Wow didn't meen to write so
much about farming,BFT (Booring Farm Talk).Thats what
all the girls around town say when the farmboys hit
the town.<br
to have a set time, evening would be best for me,then
we have the time zones.Anyways set a time and lets
see what happens.Anyone on ICQ?.I kind of like that
set up.<br
to a big Harley party tonite, should be fun.Probably
get sad from hearing the all the bikes, but oh well
still here.Everyone have a Great Weekend,Randy
Have any of you seen the newest Levo standing wheelchair? We saw the
new Levo wheelchair demoed at the World Disability Conference in
Orlando last month. The nice thing about this standing wheelchair is
that you can be standing while moving around and for those of you
that want to lie down this wheelchair will recline all the way down.
Here is a link to their website.

Hi Cindiers:<br
times. Whenever I am at work or some at home like now.
But if there was a set time to chat, I probably could
make the effort (as long as it's not during ER or
Jeopardy (pretty dull huh ?).<br
machine through e-bay. I have been renewing my knitting
that I had not done in 15 - 20 years, and so took the
plunge with the machine.<br
Actually from what I unerstand, Denver is one of the
friendliest cities for handicap access. I know what you mean
about the ice and snow. I discovered a new hazard last
fall at work: crabapples ! They make nice gooey jam on
your wheels. I asked the groundskeeper to spray the
crabapples only on top of the ramp to minimize the
production of fruits. Now, I work for the University of
Colorado at Boulder, where everyone is majorly PC. So
using chemicals to take care of the problem (only on
top of the ramp mind you) was poopooed because
chemicals are not healthy you know ? So, I figured out how
to deal with it when there are crabapples all over
the ramp, I'll just ask for the PC obsessed to come
and clean the ramp 3 times a day (before I come in,
when I take my dog out for his walk, and before I go
home. We'll see how many are still obsessed.<br
I have a mean streak in me... <br
say that I've become way less patient now that I am
in a chair. I'm not particularly proud of it, and I
am thinking about my behavior. Maybe it's the anger
and frustration coming out; then again, isn't it
better that it comes out than stay in ?<br
philosophizing for the day.<br
Hello Everyone,<br
and see how everyone is doing? Hope all is going
great in your world tonight. I'm doing
good.<br
could set up a time to go to chat? That would be very
nice...<br
Wheeling !!! Cindiers
Hi Dominique,<br
tonight? Hope all is going great!! I was reading your post
and WOW wish I had been listening and been able to
call in. Love to tell them a few things.
;-)<br
them because we have a larger bathroom stale, a
parking place near the door. Huh, as if this will deprive
them of a whole lot. <br
makes my life a little more easier to get through the
day. When I go to a store I need the extra space or I
cant open my car door wide enough to get my chair in
or out. I'm sure they wouldnt rather have me open my
door as wide as it would go and scratch their paint
job all up. It also is a benefit to them as well
because of this. I would park farther if I had a wide
space.<br
distances and theres a ton of snow and ice. I often get
stuck and then they cant drive around me. This makes it
wonderful for them as well as me. <br
remember the days when I was first hurt and most bathroom
stales werent wide enough. Still many today that arent
wide enough. Then I would have to go to the bathroom
by the sink. I carry a female urnial, I regained
bladder control but when I got to go,its fast. Its bad
when one cant even dump it in the toilet. And then I
have no choice then to dump it in the sink.. Gross I
know, but sure wont dump in on the floor. Not to
mention the embrassment of having to go out in the open.
But I got to where it didnt bother me any more. Its a
heck of alot better then wetting ones
pants.:-)<br
store or bathroom. I dont know how people could be so
cruel as to think were spoiled or dont need these
things. If they can do it,they figure so <br
disabled. SAD You know one can turn it back to them, why do
they have to have everything made only for able body
people. <br
sure seem to miss all the good stuff. ;-) Where were
you listening to this? I just found this site and I'm
glad I did. Its nice to beable to hang around with
others who know where your coming from. Nice to meet
you, take care...<br
Cindiers
Hi Dominique, know what you meen about the radio
show being instructive and destructive at the same
time.Glad i didn't hear becaause i probably would of called
and put my 2 cents in,then wished i hadn't of.Those
radio guys sure know how to twist your words around and
ended up making you look like a fool.I have listened to
many, but never heard the topic of handicapp parking come
up.Humm 9 empty spots,must be a large city?.I'm lucky to
find one, then to find a not so disabled person get in
or out.My main beef is not the closeness of the
parking, but being able to get in and out of my vehicle, been
many of a time wondering how i'm going to get back
in.One time i had to get in,move my chair out of the way
and worked the truck around to get both doors opened
up,took a while but got it done.I did say something one
day at a restroom, several stalls open for AB's,but
this one guy had to use the one and only Big stall,i
asked him when he finally got out what his dis was,i
would not of said anything, but he worked for the
business,he never said a word, but bet he wondered when he
would be called into the bosses officeLOL.Well i feel
better now too,so as Dr. Laura would say,go take on the
day,Later Randy
I sure like coming on this place. There's always
new people. Hi Cindiers: 24 years (wow)... Got to
take a break now, because my dog is putting his head
on my lap (his signal it's time to go
outside).<br
as I ws doing my program, and the topic was:
handicapped people. Questions asked by the talking head:
what's up with the handicapped parking close to the
entrance of the store ? If I have to park in the
boondocks, I don't ssee why the handicapped can't.
Handicapped people are going to use energy to roll themselves
in the store, aren't they so what's the problem ? A
woman called to say her dad was a paraplegic and was on
a morphone pump because of chronic pain: the DJ
asked OK so your father has a little chronic pain once
in a while, does that give him the right to park
closer ? Why are there 9 handicapped parking spaces and
not one of them used ?<br
and on about the large bathroom stalls for the
handicapped. He wanted to know if it was ok for him to use
them ?<br
to act around a disabled person: damn if you do,
damn if you don't. They do not want to be pitied but
if we don't pity them they become nasty.<br
pretty instructing and disgusting.<br
you for letting me vent.<br
Hi MJ~
For some reason, I can not see the photo. Can u send it to me via
email? I'd appreciate it. I use a Hi Rider to stand. Anyone else?
~Michele~
