i Nancy, I drop so many things now, I can't even
believe it. Have a few ideas. First, when in the house,
cooking, or transporting food, I have a cutting board I
lay on my lap. I can use it for food preparation,
even put the electric mixer on it. I also can carry
four glasses of soda to my guests in the family room
(they are always amazed, cuz' they think they should be
DOING FOR ME!) When I carry in groceries, I have a wire
tray, looks like a spare shelf from a refrigerator,
mine actually came with the clothes dryer, as a flat
drying surface which sets in the dryer. I am able to
pile quite a bit of stuff on it, saving trips. I often
keep my knees strapped together, I tell people it is
more ladylike, but actually it slightly minimizes the
tingling and burning that I have constantly in my lower
legs and feet. I find that when my knees are together
is is easy to carry almost anything on my lap.
Though I do unstrap my legs if I want to wedge a coke
between my legs. I also have a sling under my w/c. I
carry everything in there. Purse, cath bag, keys. While
at home I stick the portable phone, and any thing I
am using in the house. Furniture polish, garden
pruners, bottle of water, whatever. It is easy for me to
reach. They look like a little hammock sell for about
$40. at med supply or w/c shop. As far as the feet,
and shoes: It is important to wear shoes as much as
possible. I met a guy this summer whose feet had not only
dropped (shortening of achilles tendon, and back of calf,
resulting in a foot that will not sit flat) but his toes
and both feet curved downward. Really looked awful,
and the only shoes he could wear looked like
slippers, which made him look more like a "patient". He
even had to use a bungee cord to even keep his feet on
the footrest. I try to wear high top tennis shoes,
which keep my foot in proper position, and I find when
my knees are strapped together,I can put my feet to
the back on the foot rest (against the strap, which I
loosened, so it goes back further) then if I put weight on
my knees it gives the back of my legs a good
stretch. This is important especially if you ever plan on
being ready for "the cure". If your heels are 2 inches
off the ground when you stand up, it will be really
tough to walk.... Take care, geri
