Hey Anthony,

Welcome to the group!

I'm Mark a C5/6 quad also but luckily I have use of one arm so I type with a strap and pencil.

I'm 39 now and had a diving accident 5 years ago but it took me 2 1/2 years to put my life back together, since then I've found employment and started raising my family again.

We try to get together on Saturdays in the chat room around 1-2:00 cst so hopefully we'll see you there.

Peace,

Mark

bladder blues - part deux

2006-08-31 18:36:22

es Geri, neurogenic bladders HAVE to be cathed
and that is where I am at. I posted my dilema on the
new mobility board as well. There was a woman there
who used a Mountain Dew bottle. A guy gave me the
idea of adding an extension to my catheter. That way,
there would be enough tube to tuck underneath me into
the commode and bypass the need for a urinal
altogether. If it was about 18 inches long, it might reach a
commode from a wheelchair. I might start carrying a Dew
bottle just in case.<br
already using "disposable" catheters. But they still cost
money and the doctors (HMO obviously) told me they can
last a month before the plastic starts to break down.
They won't provide me with the six a day (yes I drink
a lot) i would need. Besides, there would be dirty
catheters in the trash and I would receive complaints about
that. I still end up washing things in the
sink.<br
down the drain with hot soapy water. I'm cleaner than
any guy who stands at the commode...

computer help for a friend

2006-08-31 04:05:58

Dear Vicky. I am a C5/6 quadriplegic and have been since 1984. I use the
computer quite a bit, and use a number of chat rooms.
I use a program, called, Dragon NaturallySpeaking preferred edition 5 which
is capable of controlling my whole computer. This program is readily
available throughout the USA. To allow me to have a number of programs
opened at the same time, I have had the memory on my computer increased 158

re: computer help for a friend

Hi List!
I friend of mine has a brother who was in a car accident in the
Spring. He is paralized but has some limited use of one hand. He
can use a toggle kind of switch to operate his wheelchair. He is
trying to cope with life. His sister says he lays around, watches TV
and that is about the extent of his existance. He would like to be
able to learn to use the computer. Be able to get on line and "chat"
with others and see the world through a computer. What I'd like to
know is if anyone could tell me what kind of hardware and/or software
he would need and where to find it. Like I said, he can use a toggle
switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

GATAORADE OR PEE?

2006-08-31 00:06:13

f you promise not to tell anyone, I will tell
you what I use instead of a urinal when I am out. An
empty Gatorade Bottle. I feel it is sheer genius on my
part. 1)has a secure lid in case I cannot empty
immediately, and have to put back in my bag (sometimes at
friend's I cannot fit into the bathroom) 2) IF caught
washing it out in a sink, it doesn't draw any attention
3) If observed pulling my car over to the side of
the road and dumping it in the gravel or dirt, OH
WELL! It is JUST GATORADE 4)The color is perfect! If
you need to secure it while cathing, you can wrap a
strap around it AND your leg (I use a velcro strap, to
free up my hands)<br
color, Mountain Dew Bottles! Just let your imagination
run wild. Citra, Squirt (pun intended)<br
question...aren't condom catheters for those with reflexogenic
bladders? (those that spasm when full, and empty
themselves) I thought a neurogenic bladder HAD to be cathed.
Otherwise a neurogenic female could even wear a Depends,
and not cath (yuck) does this make sense to anyone? I
didn't think a person with neurogenic bladder had that
option. Thanks Geri

fter much trial and error, My husband uses
condom catheters with a leg bag. This allows him to just
drain it into a urinal without having to deal with all
the equipment. Then he just washes his hands and he
is done. You may want to look into this as an
alternative. One of the other benefits is not having to
monitor how much you drink all day. You might want to
think about it. Many of the medical supply companys
will send you samples to try. He does use the straps
instead of the sock because it is easier to put on and
take off. Hope this helps.<br

Pati,
I am curious as to what you are using or planning on using as a wheelchair
cushion. There is a fine dynamic automatic pressure relief cushion that will
help to prevent pressure sores that maybe you should consider. This way you
can sit longer and have more mobility and freedom. Look into
www.aquilacorp.com to see this cushion.

Hi Anthony,

Welcome to the Group. I was 22 when I had my SCI accident while white-water rafting on the Upper Salt River in AZ. I hope you find the people here as friendly as easy to talk with as I do. I'm a 'little' older now but am still young at heart and mind! This is a fairly new Group so if you have any ideas, thoughts, questions about ways to help it be a better Group, I'm sure we all would love to hear them. Stay strong!

have a work situation. I use a catheter in the
restroom at work. After draining into a urinal, I dump the
contents into the commode and wash out the container and
catheter in the sink with hot soapy water. I clean
everything i need to touch beforehand, and everything I did
touch afterwards.<br
always cleaner than when I found it. This is what the
hospital taught me to do.<br
pack the urinal in my kit bag after washing and left
it in the restroom. I have done this before and my
coworkers and immediate boss are understanding and okay
with it. However one of the owners found it and told
me not to clean up in the restroom anymore. He wants
me to take it outside and flush it with the hose. I
tried to explain but he said he didn't want to hear it
and walked away. I think he is under the impression
that I dump the full urinal in the sink.<br
very angry but held it in to keep my job. This in turn
made me very depressed and so I left. I don't want to
have to deal with people like this the rest of my
life.<br

would understand.<br

Hi Stacy,

Cats do know who feeds them, don't they? It does sound like Marty is a good cat! I have one that was feral that we caught and took in to be fixed and get her shots. The Vet told us to keep her in the house a week or until the stitches weren't red. She hasn't gone back out since then. She knew a good think when she saw it!

LAPS, SHOES and DROPPING THINGS

2006-08-28 04:30:44

i Nancy, I drop so many things now, I can't even
believe it. Have a few ideas. First, when in the house,
cooking, or transporting food, I have a cutting board I
lay on my lap. I can use it for food preparation,
even put the electric mixer on it. I also can carry
four glasses of soda to my guests in the family room
(they are always amazed, cuz' they think they should be
DOING FOR ME!) When I carry in groceries, I have a wire
tray, looks like a spare shelf from a refrigerator,
mine actually came with the clothes dryer, as a flat
drying surface which sets in the dryer. I am able to
pile quite a bit of stuff on it, saving trips. I often
keep my knees strapped together, I tell people it is
more ladylike, but actually it slightly minimizes the
tingling and burning that I have constantly in my lower
legs and feet. I find that when my knees are together
is is easy to carry almost anything on my lap.
Though I do unstrap my legs if I want to wedge a coke
between my legs. I also have a sling under my w/c. I
carry everything in there. Purse, cath bag, keys. While
at home I stick the portable phone, and any thing I
am using in the house. Furniture polish, garden
pruners, bottle of water, whatever. It is easy for me to
reach. They look like a little hammock sell for about
$40. at med supply or w/c shop. As far as the feet,
and shoes: It is important to wear shoes as much as
possible. I met a guy this summer whose feet had not only
dropped (shortening of achilles tendon, and back of calf,
resulting in a foot that will not sit flat) but his toes
and both feet curved downward. Really looked awful,
and the only shoes he could wear looked like
slippers, which made him look more like a "patient". He
even had to use a bungee cord to even keep his feet on
the footrest. I try to wear high top tennis shoes,
which keep my foot in proper position, and I find when
my knees are strapped together,I can put my feet to
the back on the foot rest (against the strap, which I
loosened, so it goes back further) then if I put weight on
my knees it gives the back of my legs a good
stretch. This is important especially if you ever plan on
being ready for "the cure". If your heels are 2 inches
off the ground when you stand up, it will be really
tough to walk.... Take care, geri

someone has some good ideas as to keeping things on my

without it ending up on the floor. I have dumped the back
of my seat and raised the foot pedal up which
wouln't go hardly any higher at all. If I don't have on
shoes my feet are always handing off the front if not
around the bars which I try so hard to pay attention to.
Oh well any ideas let me know.

Neurological Research in California

2006-08-22 01:30:49

Dear Friend:
Five years ago my son Roman Reed was injured in a football game. His
neck was broken, and he became paralyzed from the shoulders down. The
doctors gave us no hope, saying he would never walk again, or close his
hands, or father a child.
Were they right? Can there be no cure: for the spinal cord injury
paralysis which struck down my son and 400,000 other Americans, more
than one out of every thousand citizens? Listen to
internationally-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Wise Young: "It is no
longer a question of if , (there can be a cure) but when" The "when"
depends on research funds.
Help us pass Californias Assembly Bill 750: the Roman Reed Spinal Cord
Injury Research Act. We are asking $25 million a year for five years,
spent on research for cure.
And something wonderful. For as researchers battle spinal cord injury
(SCI) paralysis, the knowledge gained will benefit more than five
million Americans, and their families. I am sure you know someone right
now who is struggling with the terrible memory loss of Ahlzheimers, the
crippling slow agony of multiple sclerosis, or the sudden horror of
strokeSCI research helps us fight these terrible conditions. Again, Dr.
Young:
"Spinal cord injury research aims at several targets: neuroprotection,
remyelination, regeneration, and cell replacement: all these targets are
highly relevant to Ahlzheimers, ALS, Parkinsons disease, and nearly 400
other neurological diseases"
If you agree it is time we go after these problems in a systemmatic way,
we ask that you write one letter of support, and copy it to the twelve
Senators and Assemblymembers (addresses enclosed) who will be voting on
our bill.
Years from now, we will look back, and be glad we did this work. As
Roman puts it, "Take a stand with us, supporting research funding. Take
a standso everybody can."
All best,
Don C. Reed
Chairperson, CALIFORNIANS FOR CURE: and Roman Reeds dad.
P.S. If you would like a flier with more information, e-mail me at
divrdon@...
SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR LETTER
Short personal one page letters carry the most impact. Please give
your personal reason for supporting research for curesay, I have been
in a wheelchair for twelve years, or my best friends son has multiple
sclerosis, or I know someonebe brief, but be personal.
Important: include your PHONE NUMBER (including area code) in your
address block inside the letter. They almost never call you up, but this
verifies your letter is real.
SAMPLE LETTER (we ask that you send a copy to the twelve folks on other
side.)

My task at the moment is to put together the Education Channel. As part of
that channel, I will offer information about disability programs in place at
universities. Also, I am going to offer testimonials from students with
disabilities who have attended colleges and universities. The story can be
about a good experience or a bad one. Most, if not all, of us went to
college, and we all have stories to tell!
I would greatly appreciate a brief story or testimonial from each of you. I
will probably use a picture along with the story, so if you could send a
photo too, that would be great.
I will let you all know when we launch so you can see what we are all about.
Hopefully, we will offer something for each of you. We will be relying
heavily on user input, so I look forward to any comments and suggestions you
want to offer.
Thanks in advance,

we need your support

2006-08-19 04:36:02

Hello,
Please do support a worthy cause by ordering a great gift!
Social Issue Film, Ontario non-profit, needs your support for its production
WHY?!,
about the lives of families with developmentally challenged children. We want to
make
society a more inclusive place for such people. Only then will parents of
developmentally
disabled children have the necessary strength to carry on the battle that some
of us lost.
Your support will enable us to make a difference, working in the powerful medium
of
film, which touches human emotion. Then we'll close the cycle by extending
financial
support with funds from the sale of the film to developmentally disabled
individuals.
Our fund raiser is a great gift. Statuette of mother and child, bodies forming a
heart
shape, symbolizing the universal, ever-lasting mother's love for any and all
children of
hers. It's hand painted by individuals with a developmental disability at the
Employment
Training Services of the Toronto Association for Community Living. Comes with
special
"Thank You" tag and sells at $10. See a photo and get ordering info on our web
site at
http://www.sif.ca/fundraising.html
Thank you for your time. We'll appreciate your support.
Sincerely:
Silvia Kovatchev
artistic director
and a mother who lost a child to developmental disability
P.S. Post this message to as many as you can reach.

great message

2006-08-17 12:58:12

i Floyd, Wow! Really well said. Sometimes I feel
like I must have a death wish or something. I often
feel it would be an easy escape. (of course one would
leave all the pain and suffering to loved ones, which
is extremely self centered) Not that I would do
anything to speed it up, but I certainly do not dread
it..... I find myself telling my children that if
something should happen, IT IS OKAY WITH ME, and it should
be OK with them, too. I have gone through ALOT, been
a real good sport and everything, but sometimes I
feel enough is enough! This morning on my way to work,
I thought, this life is F'd! I had to go visit a
dear friend to get a hug, so I could go on with my
day, then I did. I am better now, another day
tomorrow! Thanks for sharing. Geri

Hi Pati;
What a jerk of a husband!! You're better off without him. It sounds
like you have great kids.
I will be praying for you when you are operated on. Can one of the
kids e-mail me to keep me up to date on your condition?
You've been through so much. How do you handle the depression?
I suffer from severe clinical depression, on soc sec for it, but meds
and therapy keep me stable.
Write when you feel up to it.
And don't forget, when you need to vent, bitch, cry, or just talk, I'm
here.
God Bless,
Margie

Keep it going.

hope so too. But only through the help of others will it last. Tell your
freinds about the club. Use the club yourself. Post your thoughts and ideas.

hi margie

2006-08-12 18:34:25

hi margie, it was nice to hear from you.now i'll tell you about me.
i'm 40 yrs old, mom to three sons, ages 19,17,16. i am recently
divorced after 20 yrs of marraige. my husband dumped me while i was
still in the rehab after my accident. he said he didnt want to spend
the rest of his life with someone "disabled" . i gave him a divorce
under my conditions. yes, it would have been cheaper for him to keep
me. enough about him. i have 3 great very supportive kids who have
stuck by me thru all of this. i am now totally dependant on others for
everything. i was an active person prior to my injury and now my life
is basically boring b/c i cant get around. the hardest thing for me to
deal with is be dependant on others for the things i once took for
granite. my weeks are filled with physical and occupational therapy,
lots of drs appts and nurses coming into my home. i'm so tired of it
all. as i told you in my previous letter i'm getting ready to undergo
surgery in feb. i'm really scared b/c this surgery carries huge risk
but is necessary. i need to go for now b/c i cant hold my head up but
for a few min. at a time. do hope to hear back from you and hope the
other members will soon write to share their stories...pati

Re: Hello Everyone

2006-08-12 06:04:35

Hi Pati;
My name is Margie and since I just received your e-mail I guess I
signed up for your list (brain fog), but I'm glad I did.
You sound like you've been through hell and still more to go. My
prayers are with you. I'm going to look up all the medical terminology
and procedure later. You haven't bummed me out, you brought out the
compassionate side of me, and the thankful side of me. Pulled me out
of my pity party 8:)
A little about myself: I'm 46 yrs old and divorced. I live in Central
Florida. In 1994, I herniated a disc (c4/5) at work. My first surgery,
a disectomy, c4/5, was in 1994. My second operation, a disectomy and
laminectomy, c4/5 and c5/d, was in 1995. On Feb 1st, I will have my
third operation. This time they're going in from the front and doing a
two level bone fusion, c5/6 and c6/7. I'm nervous so I know that you
must be terrified. Do you have a good support system? Family, friends?
I'm pretty much alone, but I don't think that I'll have any problems.
Feel free to e-mail through the list or on my private e-mail address.
You can scream, cry, vent, anything. It's good for you.
By the way, who else is on this list?
Your friend,
Margie

2006-08-11 19:53:12

Hello Everyone

2006-08-11 16:20:36

hi friends, this is Pati, the owner of this list. I apologise for not
being in touch but I have not been well and unable to sit at the
computer. I suffered a spinal cord injury 2 yrs ago as the result of
an auto accident./ I broke c2-c3, also suffered a brain injury then a
stroke 3 days post injury. As your all aware there are many
complication that can arrise post SCI and I am suffering from many at
this time. The most serious being a post traumatic syrinx (ceer-nix)
which is a fluid filled cavity that develops in the spinal cord at the
sight of injury. In my case it has grown beyond my injury level and my
conditioned as worsened to the point where Ineed surgery. I'm going
intothe hospital Feb. 9th for surgery. The name of the procedure is
called "syringo subacharnoid shunt" I will be in the hospital for
several weeks recoovering. This surgery carries the risk of being
permantly paralized but without surgery the risk is the same. I will
have to go back on a vent b/c the area in which their working on
controls breathing. I will be in a drug induced coma for a week or
more. I'm very scared as you can imagine but feel this is a good
opportunity for me to tell you about this complication. Please let me
know your thoughts on this b/c I certainly dont want to bum anyone
out. I hope to hear from you all soon. Hey, our list has grown to 5
members..Take care...Pati

Re: Spinalcord pain

2006-08-10 20:46:39

Hi, I am Edna. I injured myself in a car accident in 2004. Injured c5-c7, and t4-t7. My left arm has always been week since the surgery because they operated on the t4-t7 by cutting through the left back side of the shoulder down to the rip cage. Anyway, my mean question today is; Did anyone have this similer surgery type and suffered the same problem? Due to the weekness in the left arm I could not manage my manual wheelchair, and I also begin to develope scolioses curving leftsided and left raised shoulder. What I have noticed is that my trunk balance has gotten worst and I am constently in pain. I am now in a powerchair, I balance my trunk movement by resting one hand at a time. Luckily I was right handed. Feel free to contact me as well at Girlafrique63@...............

Request for Participants for a Research Study

2006-08-10 14:28:34

My name is Shaun Burns, Ph.D. and I am working with James Mahalik, Ph.D., Sigmund Hough, Ph.D., ABPP/rp, and Sunil Sabharwal, M.D. researching issues that affect the health and adjustment of men living with spinal cord injuries. I am writing the listserv to ask for men living with spinal cord injuries to participate in an online research study. I would like to learn something about the factors influencing the adjustment and health of men living with spinal cord injuries.

I am asking all men on this listserv living with a spinal cord injury to participate in this study.

In the study, you will not be asked to give any identifying information; your participation is entirely anonymous. You will not be contacted in any way following your participation in the survey. You will not be asked to buy anything or to sign up for any membership. You are only being asked to complete the on-line survey and nothing else.

If you decide to take part, you will be asked to complete some questions about your adjustment, support available to you, your attitudes about men and masculinity, your physical well-being, and your sexual activity/interest. The survey takes approximately 20-25 minutes to complete. If you agree to participate, I ask that you complete all questionnaire materials, though you may quit and end your participation at any time. The survey can be completed online at: https://www.psychdata.com/s.asp?SID=123822

There will be no cost to you for participating in this study. Although there is no direct benefit to you for participating, I hope that the knowledge you provide during this project may help improve the treatment and education of men living with spinal cord injuries in the future. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by e-mail at shaun.burns@... if you have any questions about the study.

In closing, thank you for your willingness to consider participating in this survey. I believe that answering these types of questions can give men living with spinal cord injuries a voice in issues affecting their quality of life. Please feel free to share the web-site address of the survey with other men who you think would be willing to help us better understand the health and adjustment of men living with spinal cord injuries.

do you need help in finding intimacy and love??

2006-08-10 01:11:32

do you need help in finding intimacy and love??
Do you have a physical disability and differences and
think you might never find anyone for a intimate
relationship..If your a man with a disability and
have no feeling below the waist and can't get a
errection, that don't mean anything cause there many
other things to please your partner. If your a man
or woman born with a physical birth defect and also
feel nobody could ever love you thats wrong..All of
this is how your present yourself when out among
people..If your always looking sad and unhappy then
your chances are that you might never find happiness,But
if you feel good about yourself and have good self esteem
then the world is your for the asking..Yes life can be
rought of those with disability, but we can overcome them.
Maybe you have incont problems like me and use diapers
or cath maybe you think this will keep you from fining
intimacy and romance,In general people are understanding
of this problem.
Being disabled later in life, maybe harder for that
person to first except themselves and figure nobody
would want you because your in a wheelchair,or maybe
you lost a leg or arm.If you feel this way it might
be that way for you.,,But if you go into all this
with a positive feeling, then you won the main battle.
This group is for those that are positive about life
and themselves, its not for those that pity themself
24/7 and blame the world for there condition..
This group has been around for over five years and
is very active over the years..If you join we hope
you will be part of the group and have things to
say on the message board...
The main thing I ask of you is to have information
on your profile and not flaming of its members...
Here is the addy to the group if you like to join.As of
today we have over 1,7oo members.
Oh btw I myself am disabled with spina bifida a birth
defect of the spine...
